METRO Group

METRO Group is one of the most important international trading companies. In 2005 it achieved a turnover of 55.7 billion €. It mainly owes its success to its own independent trademarks:

Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – leading international self-service retailer
REAL – self-service stores
Extra – consumer markets
Media Markt and Saturn – largest European electronic stores
Galeria Kaufhof – department stores

RFID at METRO Group
Since November 2004 METRO Group has introduced RFID step by step along the complete process chain. This technology allows to trace a product from the manufacturer to the shop. This helps to speed up the processes, reduce stocks and costs. Since 2004 the partners of METRO Group can test this innovative technology under real conditions in the METRO Group Innovation Center.

openID-center

The initiative openID-center, which was started in April 2004, helps users to implement linked value-adding chains on an RFID basis which will become ever more relevant with regard to competition. Interested companies have the opportunity to actively participate in the further development of RFID technologies and applications in logistics.

Products and projects
The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an innovative method to link the material and the information flow on a realtime communication level. Fraunhofer IML studies and demonstrates this new technology and its use in the internal material flow and for superordinate (software) applications. The integrative basis for this “openID initiative” is the linking of the testing equipment in the institute’s so-called MatLog hall.

  • Reusables management
  • Traceability by means of intelligent containers
  • Material flow control – autonomous and self-controlled logistic objects
  • ASP platform to control and integrate the information flow
